This week is Learning Disability Awareness Week 2019

……… and though it takes more than a week to raise awareness about learning disabilities this is never the less important as the people it is seeking to help really do need awareness raised about them. They are a group that somehow always seems to be largely forgotten by wider society, except when the latest care scandal puts them in the media spotlight – before it moves on again.

However, this year it culminates with nursing staff around the country celebrating 100 years of the specialism. With that in mind in addition to encouraging and supporting people to attend various activities that promote healthy lifestyles and support positive well being within their local communities two of our registered managers will be seeking to raise awareness of health screening amongst women.

We were delighted when 2 of the ladies we support asked if they could host an event in their home. With the seed now planted and the ladies keen to send out invitations it seemed opportune that the event was held this week. So, this weekend they are holding a drop-in coffee morning and have invited all the ladies we support to join them for an informal gathering. The importance of health screening will be discussed and some easy read pictorial information will be shared. All over a cup of tea and some mid-morning snacks, healthy ones of course!

Watch this space!.
