Care Day, the world’s biggest celebration of children and young people with care experience, took place this year on 21 February 2020. Care Day 2020 is an opportunity to celebrate the rights of care experienced children and young people and is a joint initiative between five children’s rights charities across the U.K. and Ireland, under the 5 Nations 1 Voice alliance. Become in England, EPIC in Ireland, VOYPIC in Northern Ireland, Voices from Care in Wales and Who Cares?
The alliance wants a world where the childhoods of these children and young people allow them to thrive and achieve their dreams so that they go onto have a future that is fulfilled, and they are proud of. It is also an opportunity to illustrate how care experienced people can feel different to others and why.
So, this Care Day and indeed every other day make this your chance to get vocal, get social, or to get together in celebration of the care experienced community.
Catholic Care was one of the fore runners of setting up Children’s Rights in Leeds in conjunction with Save the Children, to promote the voice and rights of children and young people in care. Monthly visits to our home from the current Children’s Rights workers give the children and young people an opportunity to voice their experiences of their care.
We continue to ensure that the children and young people in our care live in a homely environment and have a variety of experiences, encouraging their involvement to achieve their potential and aspirations. One young person expressed his gratitude for all the help, care and love given over the past 4 years: “It has always felt like a home to me, I have learnt lots and will continue to stay in touch with the home , it will always be a big part of my life and I can’t thank you all enough for everything you have done for me. It’s greatly appreciated.”
On the 21 February the young people in our Leeds residential home all confidently contributed to the recruitment process for a Registered Manager for their home with insightful and definite ideas of what they believe a good Home Manager should be.
