International Day of People with Disabilities

3 December marks the annual celebration of people with disabilities with the 2020 theme of “not all disabilities are visible”. This special day acts as a reminder to us all of the importance of removing barriers for all people living with disability, both visible and invisible.

At Catholic Care we have homes for adults with learning disabilities and a mental health supported accommodation scheme and all the people we care for and support here fall within this definition.

As a charity we focus on an individual’s ability and not their disability. Steve is the Deputy Manager at one of our Leeds Homes for adults with a learning disability and captures this can do approach perfectly below:

Having a can do attitude to life

Having a zest for life is all important in our own lives as carers and support workers, it is also important to those whom we support. Everyone should have a dream, something they would love to try, something to overcome a fear perhaps or boost one’s confidence.

Having the freedom to choose something exhilarating to do, an activity that you thought was out of reach, a trip somewhere, all become possible when those we support are encouraged to give it a go, to think outside the box, to take a leap of faith. A deep sense of joy and confidence is often found on the other side of fear.

Take Caroline, paragliding on holiday, she never thought she could do it, the picture clearly shows the enormous pleasure she felt pushing her boundaries. She then moved swiftly on to indoor skydiving and is now waiting to carry out a 10,000 feet tandem skydive!!

Robbie loves walking, in all weathers, it’s the connection to the natural world that he craves. He has climbed a few hills now, he has all the right kit and craves open spaces, devoid of people, just the wind, rain, sun, the trees and hills.

Ann had a bash at carriage riding and loved every minute of it, And Paul had a track day in a sports car doing over a 100mph!!

We have had adventure breaks, long walks along some of Britain’s most idyllic sites gathering memories as we go.

The world is a big place full of adventure, you don’t have to look far to find something different to do, take that step of faith and try that thing you’ve always wanted to do, you can’t fail because you tried!
