“Great oaks from little acorns grow” this was written in one of the congratulations cards sent to the Friday Friends Team and indeed this statement could not be more apt, as what started out in 1994 as a cup of tea and a biscuit with friends has, 25 years later become a strong community group welcoming all.
With so many people to be invited, a new venue had to be chosen for the day’s festivities. Huddersfield Irish Centre was very kind in allowing us to use their function room for the event. Afternoon Tea was provided for all the guests with copious amounts of tea and coffee.
It was a sight to behold, original committee members, past and present volunteers together with Catholic Care staff, Community champions, local Councillors & Madam Mayor Cllr Gwen Lowe. A speech was given by Tom Foley one of the original members of the committee for the project and also Madam Mayor gave an impromptu speech to complete the formalities.
It wouldn’t have been Friday Friends if there wasn’t a raffle and a game of bingo! Much debate was had as to whether we should have them or not but somehow after 25 years it just wouldn’t have been the same without them!
A huge thank you must go to One Community Foundation – JL Brierley Fund who funded the celebration. Also too, a huge thank you to Margaret who organised all the catering, including making the cake and of course our team of wonderful helpers who we absolutely could not function on a weekly basis without.
Unfortunately due to unforeseen circumstances the children from Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School in Huddersfield were unable to join us on the day so we have planned for them to come and sing for us on Friday 28th June where we shall share together a celebratory cake. Long may the festivities continue!!
